Reflections on a Sunday
I have almost an hour’s drive to get to church every Sunday. It allows a lot of time for prayer, contemplation, praise and worship, and allowing the Holy Spirit to quicken my spirit on the drive back and forth. Today, as I turned toward I-10 going home, I casually glanced over at a nearby church where folks were exiting the building from their service. I was considering the sermon from my pastor, and as I watched those leaving their service, I couldn’t help but wonder what their sermon topic was and the ways each of us were impacted by what we experienced.
Were we changed today? Was it more than just an obligatory, weekly meeting that we were expected to attend? Were our souls stirred by the presence of Almighty God? Did our hearts touch His and did our praise flow freely in spirit and in truth?
Were we challenged? Did we hear something from Holy Spirit that convicted us, causing repentance for any posturing we presented, without our hearts being engaged? Did we acknowledge things in our lives that needed to change? Did we feel the fire of revival stirring us to action for the multitude of souls lost in this world without Jesus?
Were we charged? Did the Word of God fill us with excitement and stir revival in our hearts? Were we filled with a sense of urgency to do more, be more, heed more of God’s prompting? Did we leave the service anticipating what God had waiting for us or were we relieved the obligation was over for another week?
Changed. Challenged. Charged. Those are the words Holy Spirit dropped into my spirit as I merged into traffic and headed home. Three tiny little words, but filled with great questions, great reflections and great possibilities. It’s a sermon that will preach.
